The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has forced the food industry to close their dining rooms and lay off staff as events are cancelled and fewer people go out to eat. Catering businesses have felt the pinch. Callier’s Catering and Hollyberry Catering are working together to bring the community fresh curbside pickup food in a joint effort to feed families and businesses and stay afloat.
Callier’s is a St. Louis caterer for area weddings, business meetings and other important events for 36 years, and Hollyberry’s is a local catering company that has contributed to the success of weddings, parties, corporate gatherings and countless other events for 20 years. Both are recipients of numerous awards.
Callier’s Catering had to do a mass layoff March 16. “We have never had a layoff like that,” General Manager Kelley Callier said. “It was tough. We care about our employees. But there are no events to cater and no revenue coming in to pay them.”
Hollyberry went through the same ordeal. “It was awful,” Director of Events & Gifts Nicole Hunt said. “It’s a heavy burden to have to choose who doesn’t get to work anymore. We are actively trying to save the business so we can rehire them after all this is over.”
In addition to the layoffs another 60 part-time people who handle catered events will be without a paycheck until the economy recovers from the coronavirus pandemic.
The two companies are anxious to save their remaining employees’ jobs by combining resources for curbside pickup food at either location‒10037 Manchester Road or 14787 Manchester Road.
They’ve cut prices with a special chef-prepared menu. Each has added their most popular meals to a single menu. Plus, they are giving a free chocolate gooey butter cake with each order. The menu offers nine meals that are ready to serve or can be frozen for later use. “Each meal is prepared under strict procedures in our kitchens to ensure the health and safety of our clients and staff,” Hunt said.
Curbside Pickup Food Entrees Include:
- Eggplant parmesan
- Thai basil chicken
- Barbeque pulled pork or chicken
- Beef filet medallions with bordelaise sauce
- Classic lasagna
- Chicken enchiladas
- Parmesan encrusted chicken
- Braised beef brisket
Supporting Local Businesses
“Hopefully, people choose to support local businesses that are more vulnerable to going out of business than chain restaurants,” Hunt said.
“We are excited to be here after this is all over to cater those 14 weddings that had to be postponed and all the future events that rely on the care local catering business provide,” Callier added.
Giving Back to the Community
Besides offering fresh curbside pickup food, the two companies are still managing to give back to their communities as best as they can by partnering with Haven Street to offer half priced meals each week for homeless and food insecure guests.
